Altar I update: Remap keys, open source
Published 28 Jan 2026 at 12:00 GMT

Altar I has received a major update — v3.1.1. This update adds real-time key remapping via ZMK Studio, open sources Altar I firmware, and comes with an avalanche of user experience and technical improvements. Download the update here.

Realtime key remapping

With the latest firmware update, Altar I now supports realtime key mapping via an application called ZMK Studio. To use ZMK Studio simply connect Altar I to your computer via USB or Bluetooth, and start editing your keymap via the web app or the native app for Windows, macOS, or Linux.

Open sourcing Altar I firmware

Altar I firmware is now open source and publicly available on GitHub, fulfilling a promise from when Altar I first launched. Altar I firmware was built on open source so it's important that we honour the spirit that has helped us so much.

Other release notes

A lot of refactoring and rework has gone into this update. The update brings improvements in stability, performance, and user experience. The foundational software under Altar I firmware — ZMK and Zephyr — underwent large changes and it was a lot of work to bring Altar I up to date with these improvements. We also tackled some user experience improvements based on user feedback, for example:

  • Added HOME and END key bindings: Press FN + LEFT ARROW for HOME and FN + RIGHT ARROW for END
  • Added ability to swap CMD/WIN and CTRL positions: Press CMD/WIN + CTRL + ENTER to swap positions. Press combo again to deactivate
  • Change to GLOBE key behaviour on macOS: Tapping GLOBE now opens the emoji viewer
  • New dial behaviour: Hold FN + turn dial to zoom in/out on macOS.
